What it takesWhat does it take to build a Kaua`i Habitat Home?
Land - The single most expensive component of a Habitat home on Kaua`i is the land to build it on. Buildable lots on Kauai start at $160,000 and go up from there
Building Materials Even with donated materials, we spend between $65,000-$80,000 on construction materials for each home.
Tools and Equipment - From small hand tools to large table saws and forklifts, Kaua`i Habitat buys various tools and equipment each year. In 2009 we will need $45,000 to replace old tools, buy new ones, and equip an additional job site.
Dedicated Homeowners our Partner Families - Each Habitat home begins with a dedicated individual or family who seeks to improve their life through the dedication, hard work and discipline of home ownership. Priceless!
Volunteers Volunteers include our Board of Directors, Global Village groups, individuals like Dan who comes every Tuesday to repair our equipment, Momi who comes every Saturday to help in our ReStore, students on school break, island visitors who add service to their vacation, local businesses who send a group of employees to our worksite, and many more. Habitat volunteers work in other areas besides construction. They may be one-time volunteers, a seasoned regular, and everything in between. Priceless!
Construction Staff Although volunteers and homeowners perform a great deal of the construction work, we must employ skilled construction professionals to oversee and guide their work. We also hire certified electricians and plumbers for their specialized skills.
Office Staff For its small size, Kaua`i Habitat office staff wear an impressive number of hats! Some of the functions they must cover are: loan officer, land developer, social worker, fundraiser, and volunteer recruiter.
Money For all services and products that cant be donated or volunteered, we must use money. It takes $300,000 to keep Kauai Habitat running for one year.
Community Support Community support for building affordable homes is essential to our success. We are fortunate that Kaua`i residents understand the need for affordable housing and how everyone on the island benefits. Priceless!
Habitat for Humanity International Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that provides local affiliates like Kaua`i Habitat with essential support and name recognition. Priceless!
